Smoking Archetypes

If you are a smoker, you may fall into one or more of the following types:

Biter
These are the smokers who bite down on the cigarette with their teeth. They seem to be veteran smokers, who leave the cigarette in their mouth while talking to you. They let the ash build up on the end of the cigarette, and only tap it off when absolutely necessary.

Savourer
These smokers love their cigarettes, a lot. They take long and thorough drags, savouring every moment of it. A true savourer will even close their eyes during these long, passionate drags, as if it were a kiss. They smoke their cigarettes well, and right down to the filter. Savourers don’t intend on quitting any time soon.

Last Minute Puffer
These smokers must light up a cigarette a minute before their bus is leaving. They plead with the driver to let them have “a couple of puffs”, and will only be a minute. They race against the clock, getting in as many puffs as possible, but they eventually discard the cigarette with many puffs still left in it. What a waste.

Leaners
These smokers don’t want to part with their cigarette. They’re outside having a good smoke, and when it’s time to go back in, they take a last drag which lasts an eternity. They lean towards the ground while taking this last drag, as if they’re about to let go and drop the near-finished cigarette. As they keep leaning forward and taking this long drag however, their fingers can’t seem to pull that cigarette away from their mouth. They eventually give up, flick it off, and blow out the smoke with satisfaction.

Thrift Smoker
A thrift smoker will take last minute puffs, but then brush the cigarette tip lightly on the ground, and save it for later. Often these smokers have a limited supply of cigarettes, or have bummed one off another fellow smoker somewhere. They treasure their cigarettes, and are sometimes spotted with a fresh cigarette perched on top of their ear (being saved for later).

Billower
These smokers take a strong, savoury drag, and then let the smoke billow out of their mouth. The long drag has taken all their energy away, and they have none left to blow the smoke out. Either that, or they can’t be bothered, as they are too deeply immersed in the smoking sensation. They don’t go out of their way to blow the smoke out; it comes out on the next exhalation in their breathing cycle (sometimes out of the nose too). Experienced billowers will talk to you while billowing smoke, expelling puffs of smoke from their mouth as they mutter each word of speech.
